It’s easy to get excited about a side hustle!

You watch a YouTube video.

Read a success story.

See someone posting screenshots of their earnings.

And suddenly you’re thinking:

“Maybe this is the one.”

A few weeks later, reality arrives.

The website isn’t getting visitors.

The sales aren’t coming in.

The social media posts aren’t getting much engagement.

The excitement fades.

And before long, another side hustle joins the growing pile of things you once started.

Sound familiar?

If so, you’re not alone.

In fact, I don’t think most side hustles fail because they’re bad ideas.

I think most side hustles fail because people stop.

I’ve Tried More Than A Few

Over the years, I’ve tried my fair share of side hustles.

Some worked.

Some didn’t.

I’ve tried:

• Dropshipping
• Selling products on eBay
• Car boot sales
• Betterware
• T-shirt printing
• Utility Warehouse
• Blogging

Looking back, I probably learned more from the failures than the successes.

One of my biggest mistakes was selling products on eBay without doing enough research first.

I bought stock.

Stored stock.

Packed stock.

Posted stock.

Then watched competitors undercut prices.

Before long, I was left with products I couldn’t easily sell and money tied up in stock.

It was frustrating.

But it taught me an important lesson.

Not every side hustle is as simple as it first appears.

The Problem Isn’t Usually The Idea

When people talk about side hustles, they often focus on finding the perfect opportunity.

The perfect business.

The perfect product.

The perfect idea.

But I don’t think that’s where most people go wrong.

Most people go wrong because they expect results too quickly.

They expect visible progress.

Immediate rewards.

Proof that it’s working.

And when that doesn’t happen, they quit.

The Bamboo Tree Lesson

There’s a story about a bamboo tree.

For years, you water it.

You nurture it.

You look after it.

And nothing appears to happen.

No growth.

No visible results.

Nothing.

Then one day, it suddenly shoots upwards.

Was it growing all along?

Of course it was.

You just couldn’t see it.

Many side hustles are exactly the same.

The work is happening.

The learning is happening.

The foundations are being built.

But because the results aren’t visible yet, people assume it’s not working.

So they stop.

My Biggest Side Hustle Mistake

Ironically, one of my biggest mistakes was giving up too soon.

Many years ago, I first looked at Utility Warehouse.

I had a go.

Then I stopped.

I didn’t give it enough time.

I didn’t trust the process.

I didn’t appreciate how long success can take.

Looking back, I should have stuck with it.

Thankfully, I came back to it later.

This time, I approached it differently.

I focused on consistency.

I focused on helping people.

And within a few months, things started moving in the right direction.

The opportunity hadn’t changed.

My mindset had.

The Invisible Results

One of the most powerful lessons I’ve ever come across came from reading The Slight Edge.

The idea is simple.

Small actions repeated consistently often create results that are invisible at first.

You don’t see the benefits immediately.

You don’t notice much difference after a week.

Or even a month.

But over time, those small actions begin to compound.

The challenge is that most people quit during the invisible phase.

The phase where effort exists but results haven’t caught up yet.

Helping Beats Chasing Money

Another lesson I’ve learned is this.

People who focus only on money often struggle.

That might sound strange.

After all, making money is usually why people start.

But when money becomes the only motivation, it’s easy to lose enthusiasm when progress is slow.

Helping people is different.

Helping people gives purpose.

Helping people creates relationships.

Helping people creates trust.

And trust tends to create opportunities over time.

The side hustles I’ve enjoyed most have always involved helping someone solve a problem.

The income came later.

Success Usually Takes Longer Than You Think

We live in a world of instant results.

Next-day delivery.

Instant streaming.

Instant messaging.

Side hustles don’t work like that.

Building something meaningful takes time.

Whether it’s:

• A blog
• A YouTube channel
• A network marketing business
• Affiliate marketing
• A freelance service
• An online store

Success often takes longer than people expect.

And that’s exactly why most people never experience it.

They leave before the rewards arrive.

What I Would Tell My Younger Self

If I could go back twenty years and give myself one piece of advice, it would be this:

Start.

Be consistent.

Trust the invisible results.

Don’t give up too soon.

Simple advice.

But powerful advice.

Because the biggest risk isn’t failure.

The biggest risk is quitting just before things start working.

Keep it simple.

Pick one thing.

Not five things.

One thing.

Commit to it.

Learn.

Improve.

Stay consistent.

Give it time.

And remember that most side hustles don’t fail because they’re bad ideas.

They fail because people stop.

They won’t make you rich overnight.

And they certainly won’t work without effort.

But they can create something incredibly valuable.

Options.

More options.

Less stress.
